Emmy and Golden mike award winning television reporter, weather forecaster, environmental activist, author, and organic gardening guru; just a few of the things which keep San Diego’s Loren Nancarrow busy.
For nearly 30 years Loren has been there as San Diegans turned on their TVs for news and weather. He has been a staple of both ABC 10 News and CBS 8’s evening news offerings. During the quiet weather times, he could always be counted on for sage gardening advise, or quirky but effective tips for getting rid of pests. Rarely a week goes by without Nancarrow encouraging his followers to compost as a way of reducing their contribution to landfills and as a way to improve the soil, feed plants and retain soil moisture. An avid kitchen enthusiast, his personal recipes for chili, protein rich smoothies, homemade vanilla extract, and even posole are among the most down-loaded items on his web pages.
While many TV weather personalities are the clowns of the newscast, Nancarrow has preferred a more serious activist role, often speaking out on environmental issues of the day, as varied as climate change, marine mammals use of city beaches, and politicians clueless hand wringing over water shortages while they continue to hand out water meters like candy and hop scotch around the country promoting growth. His outspoken views are often met with a cringe by nervous TV executives, but Nancarrow has remained convinced the San Diego region has the ability to be a model of how a large urban population can coexist with the natural wealth of the area. To do it, he insists we must manage growth, live sustainably and adopt a mindset which views each organism as part of the whole living earth and playing its role in systems working as they should.
Walking the walk is important to the 55 year old Nancarrow. He is a founding trustee of the EcoLife Foundation , involved in conservation efforts in Africa, Mexico, the Caribbean and here in San Diego. Loren is also on boards at the San Diego Zoological Society, Chula Vista Nature Center, The Water Conservation Garden, and Quail Botanical Gardens.
He is the coauthor of 3 books dealing with organic gardening, and natural pest control, and the natural history of earthworms. Dead Snails Leave No Trails, The Worm Book, and Dead Daisies Make Me Crazy are published by Random House and 10 Speed Press.
The long time North San Diego County resident is married to Real Estate broker and owner of Nancarrow Realty Group Inc., Susie Fleming Nancarrow. The couple has three children, Graham 21, a college student getting his degree in real estate entrepreneurship, Hannah 20, a dean’s list junior at San Diego State University, and Britta, a junior at Canyon Crest Academy.
Nancarrow’s newest ventures include, environmental consulting, large scale facility worm composting, media consulting and co-writing his latest gardening book Garbage in, Garden Out. Loren is also a popular speaker on the media, gardening and the environment.
